How to take skin progress photos that are actually comparable

The short answer

Same window, same time of day, same distance, same camera, bare face, neutral expression, no filter. Face the light rather than standing in front of it, mark where you stand, and never switch between front and back camera mid-test. Everything else is detail — those seven make two photos comparable.

Almost everyone has a folder of progress photos that turned out to be useless. Not because the photos were bad — because they were not comparable. Two photos of the same face in two different lights can look more different than the same face six weeks apart. Which means the folder cannot answer the only question you took it for.

This is a fixable problem, and it is fixable for free in about ten minutes of setup.

Light: the one that ruins everything

If you fix one variable, fix this one. Light direction changes apparent texture. Light colour changes apparent tone. Light intensity changes what your camera decides to do with exposure, which changes both.

You do not have to eyeball this. The Same-Light Check reads the actual pixel brightness of whatever your camera is pointed at and tells you whether it is usable, then remembers the reading so tomorrow you can tell whether the light has drifted. Position, distance and angle

After light, geometry. Three things move without you noticing:

  • Distance. Closer means more apparent detail and, on a wide phone lens, more distortion at the centre of your face. If photo one is at arm's length and photo two is at half that, texture will look different for purely optical reasons.
  • Camera height. Below eye level foreshortens and emphasises the jaw and under-eye area; above eye level does the opposite. Eye level, every time.
  • Head tilt and rotation. A few degrees changes which side of your face the light lands on. Look straight at the lens.

The fix for all three is one floor mark and one habit: stand on the mark, hold the phone at eye level, look at the lens. A background feature — a door frame edge, the corner of a picture — is a free alignment check: if it is in the same part of the frame, you are in the same place.

Camera settings that quietly lie

Modern phone cameras are opinionated, and several of their opinions are about faces.

Time of day, and your face's daily cycle

Skin is not the same at 7am and 10pm. Fluid settles overnight and drains through the morning, so under-eyes are usually puffier early. Oil accumulates across the day. What you ate and how much you slept show up too, on a scale that can easily exceed a week of product effect.

None of that is a problem if it is the same every time. Pick one hour and stay there. The best hour is the one you are reliably home for — the ideal time you will keep for four days beats the perfect time you will abandon.

The ten-minute setup

  1. Walk around and find the window

    Look for indirect daylight you can face. North-facing windows are the most consistent through the day in the northern hemisphere; any window works if you are not in direct sun.

  2. Check the exposure before you commit

    Open the Same-Light Check on your phone, point it at yourself in that spot, and look for "good". If it says too dark or overexposed, move and try again. Save the reading once it passes.

  3. Mark the floor

    Tape, a rug corner, a specific tile. Two minutes now saves the entire dataset later.

  4. Fix the camera settings

    Beauty off, filters off, flash off, one camera, HDR decided. Do it once.

  5. Take day zero — three shots, keep the sharpest

    Bare face, neutral expression, hair off your face the same way you will do it every day. Phone vertical, eye level, look at the lens.

  6. Make an album and name it with the date

    A dedicated album on your phone. If you have to scroll a camera roll to find day one, you will not do it. This is the whole reason a purpose-built app exists — not because the photography is hard, but because the filing is.

Comparing them without fooling yourself

Two rules make the comparison honest.

Line up one fixed feature. The eye line is easiest. Put the two photos side by side, at the same size, with the eyes at the same height. Without that, your eye does the comparing badly and you will read a difference in framing as a difference in skin. What is the best light for skin progress photos?

Indirect daylight from a window you are facing. It is soft, it comes from one direction, and it is roughly repeatable at the same hour. Overhead bathroom lights are the worst common option — they come from above, which carves shadows under the eyes and rakes across every surface irregularity. A ring light is genuinely the most repeatable option of all if you own one, because it does not depend on the weather.

Should I take them daily or weekly?

Weekly is enough to see change. Daily is easier to remember and gives you spares for the days the light was wrong. Pick whichever you will actually do — a sloppy daily habit is worth less than a careful weekly one.

Front camera or back camera?

Back camera is sharper on every phone. Front camera is the one you will actually use, and it is fine. Whichever you pick, never switch mid-test: the two cameras have different lenses, different fields of view and different processing, so swapping halfway through introduces a change that looks like a result.

Does my phone smooth my skin without telling me?

Very possibly. Several phones apply skin smoothing to the front camera by default, and some do it in Portrait mode on both cameras. Find it in the camera settings, turn it off once, and check by photographing something with fine texture. If it is on, you are tracking the software.

How do I get my face in the same position every time?

Three anchors: a floor mark for where you stand, eye level for the phone, and a fixed background feature (a door frame, a picture edge) that should sit in the same place in frame. Some people put a strip of tape on the floor. It looks silly and it works.

Is it worth photographing under a magnifier or a special lamp?

Not for this. Specialist imaging answers a different question and needs the same device each time to mean anything. The value of a phone photo is that you will actually take it 30 days running — consistency beats resolution here by a large margin.
